Houghton Wines Nannup operates a 5,000t premium white and red wine production facility, producing a full range of commercial through to premium wines from grapes sourced from across Western Australia’s grape growing regions including Margaret River, Pemberton and Frankland River.
In this role
Your main duties will be assisting in the management of all winemaking operations on site, within the guidance and parameters set by group and senior winemakers, for the Vintage period.
Key accountabilities include
- Monitor the winemaking program in the absence of other Winemakers
- Drive exceptional levels of winery hygiene and general housekeeping
- Work with a ‘hands on approach’ to creating all of the Houghton premium wines
- Oversee grape intake and processing according to supplied schedule
- Conduct press cuts and juice assessments
- Undertake winemaking trials as required
- Ensure the relevant analysis and amelioration of juice/wine on site is performed as required to ensure compliance with wine specifications.
- Participate in the daily ferment tastings during vintage and the subsequent delivery of work orders
- Report on site operations in a timely, accurate and clear manner
- Carry out cellar work as required, following all work instructions and safety procedures
- In the absence of the Cellar Supervisor, maintain supplies and storage condition of winery materials as requested and required

Essential knowledge and skills are
- A passion for wine and winemaking
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Enthusiasm, reliability and energy
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a dynamic team
- Ability to give and follow verbal and written instructions
Required experience is
- Exposure to premium cool climate wine production is essential
- Experience working in a premium winemaking facility (minimum two vintages)
- Minimum two years’ experience as an Assistant Winemaker or Winemaking role (highly desirable)
Essential qualifications are
- A tertiary qualification in winemaking or a related science
- High Risk Work licence for Forklift Truck (highly desirable but not essential)
Physical and other requirements
This job requires that you are:
- Physically fit to undertake manual tasks
- Flexible and able to work shift work, weekend work and overtime as required
- Reliable and punctual
- Able to work under pressure
This role involves:
- Working outdoors
- Working with hazardous substances
- Working in a noisy environment
- Working up to 12 hours per day, six days per week during the peak Vintage period
