OVERVIEW:

Southern Cross Farms (SC Farms) provides horticultural management services to private, institutional and corporate investment groups with several production sites across Sunraysia, and also including operations in the Murray Valley, Riverland and Riverina regions. 

Reporting to the General Manager - Operations, the role provides an opportunity for the successful applicant to further develop their operational experience in horticultural production at a management level. 

Industry training and technical support will be provided as the Company continues the development of more efficient farm production systems and enhanced compliance programs.

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

Plan, implement and manage the business and operational aspects of an operating wine and table grape property.

Develop strong working environment and relationships with farm operations team, suppliers, customers and contractors to ensure effective implementation of farm operating plans and continued efficiency improvements. 

Support the Southern Cross Farms Team to achieve the following: 

  1. Ensure the profitable and effective operation and functioning of farm operations.
  2. Provide reports on operational plans, crop quality and compliance
  3. Maintain compliance with workplace health and safety, HR policies, food safety and environmental objectives.
  4. Implementation of Direction, Strategy and Goals 

Assist SC Farms to provide advisory, property reviews and due diligence services to external parties when required. 

Ensuring farm operations comply with all aspects of Global GAP and other relevant quality assurance programs. 

Assist the team with the further development of farm management systems and quality assurance accreditations. 

Assist in hosting farm owners visiting the properties to ensure a positive experience. 

Actively participate in internal and external training programs in addition to further industry training and professional development 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

Diploma of Horticulture is desirable but not essential. 

Formal training and/or experience in the following areas will be highly regarded: 

  1. Agronomic experience in chemical and fertiliser applications (wine and table grapes)
  2. Farm Safety
  3. Irrigation system management
  4. Planning and Budgeting
  5. Pest and disease identification and control
  6. High Level Communication Skills
  7. Food Hygiene, HACCP
  8. Freight and Logistics management
  9. Technology and Machinery 

Driver’s license is essential.  

SELECTION CRITERIA: 

  1. A demonstrated ability to develop and implement a financial plan to manage the entire farming asset.
  2. A demonstrated commitment to the principles of workplace safety and compliance.
  3. A demonstrated ability to meet the compliance requirements of managing a farming business such as chemical handling, freight and logistics, OH&S requirements and safe food handling practices.
  4. A demonstrated ability to plan and co-ordinate the production and harvest of a variety of crops such as table grapes and wine grapes.
  5. A demonstrated ability to lead a team, communicate effectively and ensure adherence to standards. 

EXPERIENCE:

Significant practical experience with horticultural production including prior management experience is required, preferably in vineyard operations with a particular focus on both table grapes and wine grapes.        

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  

A strong team environment is essential and the ability to work within a team over a wide group, and/or individually is important.

REMUNERATION/CONDITIONS:

An attractive remuneration package will be offered subject to the applicant’s experience, skills and qualifications. A vehicle, computer and mobile phone will be provided as will any other tools necessary associated with the position. 

The position will include a 3-month probation period unless the successful applicant is an existing employee within the SC Farms group of companies. 

New employees will be required to pass a Pre-Employment Drug & Alcohol screening.
