Senior Winemaker (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

The purpose of the Senior Winemaker is to support and assist the Board and the General Manager by playing an integral part in planning and organizing the winemaking requirements of a contract processing facility. This will be achieved by working in close consultation with a select number of clients to provide a service that is committed to quality wine production.

The role will also be hands on position where the winemaker will need to manage a winemaking team with the aim of developing a passionate wine culture.

Job Requirements

Principal Supervision Duties
  • Provides leadership and technical direction to the winemaking team
  • Manages performance and development of winemaking team
  • Coordinates and controls the production of wine to ensure volume and quality are met
  • Formulates vintage crush plan and fruit intake schedule
  • Promotes continuous improvement within winery
  • Aware of legislative requirements and raises concerns with Management
  • Ensure policy compliance – quality, management systems and process improvements
  • Actively support a safe work environment by promoting quality-driven work practices
  • Provides input and expertise into capital expenditure when required
  • Oversee the development of Standard Operating Procedures and ensure that they are followed.
  • Assist in the training and development of personnel through involvement in the team.
  • Attendance at professional events as required
  • Working with the Operations Manager & Cellar Manager to coordinate and complete the required day-to-day winery operations.

Principal Winemaking Duties
  • Preparation and maintenance of base wines from fruit receival to final blending
  • Client portfolio management
  • Involved in the production and supervision of all standard winemaking processes

  • Ensure WH&S Policies are adhered to
  • Maintain a safe work environment through quality-driven work practices
  • Write and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Develop co-operative team environment
  • Ensure a high level of information flow
  • Identify training and development needs
  • Comply with all State and Federal legislation, pertaining to production of wine.

Other duties as from time to time may be required.

Hours
Change as a function of Vintage and Non-vintage.
Vintage Role lasting for approximately 3 months and it is expected that you will be required to work 12 hour shifts, 6 days per week as part of the Winemaking Team.

Knowledge, Stills, Qualifications and Experience
  • Degree in Oenology
  • A minimum of 10 years winemaking experience working in an intense production environment
  • Previous experience in managing a small team is required
  • Previous experience with Vintrace (wine management software) is desired
  • Developing leadership skills
  • Effectively communicate and articulate ideas in a team environment
  • The technical skills and knowledge to operate equipment used in winery operations.

  • Excellent reading, writing and arithmetic skills.
