We are seeking an experienced and professional Cellar Door Manager who is enthusiastic and passionate to join our dynamic team and further build our reputation, while expanding our Cellar Door's daily activities and planned events within the Mudgee Region.

Gilbert Family Wines was established in 2004 by fifth generation winemaker Simon Gilbert; followed by sixth generation winemaker Will Gilbert whom is expanding the gilbert brand further with his experimental ranges and exciting wine techniques.

Together, Simon and Will craft honest wines which are reflective of the region within which they are grown and varietally true, wines that highlight a sense of place and style whilst at the same time paying tribute to our heritage.

About the Role:

The Cellar Door Manager is responsible for the day to day running of the cellar door, organisation of private events and all back of house cellar door operations, reporting, staff and maintenance. You will lead and manage the team to ensure we provide a unique brand experience for all our customers and encouragement of repeat sales.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to expand your knowledge of wines, wine regions and the winemaking processes. This knowledge will help you lead informative wine tastings for our cellar door guests, whilst building on your passion of wine. 

This is a hands-on role that will draw on advanced communication and interpersonal management to continue to build and grow within our Cellar Door team. This role necessitates someone who is entrepreneurial, motivated by meeting sales targets and energised by being part of a thriving Cellar Door within the Mudgee wine region.

This position is responsible for managing all aspects of the Cellar Door operations and events management, along with engaging our customers and sharing your wine knowledge. You will assist management in developing and implementing business strategies, training processes and sales plans throughout the year. 

With sales and management experience, leadership skills and an essential background in hospitality service (highly desirable) you will be the perfect fit!

Key Responsibilities:

     Management of all Hospitality Operations of the Venue including: 

  • Lead, manage & support The Cellar by Gilbert team
  • Manage staffing levels in conjunction with the HR Manager, and initiate effective cost savings where possible
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, executive chefs & industry peers
  • Conduct exemplary wine tastings – house training will be provided
  • Encourage and Promote responsible service of alcohol at all times
  • Comply with WH&S policies and procedures – maintain and update as required
  • Represent Gilbert Family Wines within the Cellar Door and its products at events and functions; as required both during and after hours
  • Implement strategies to actively promote ‘The Collector’ wine club database and its membership sales
  • Conduct staff training in POS, customer service, wine knowledge, and food/wine experiences
  • Development of Cellar Door event packages in conjunction with the Cellar Door Chef, Marketing & Sales Manager and Winemaker/s
  • Development of promotional strategies to increase awareness of The Cellar by Gilbert as a venue; in conjunction with the Marketing & Sales Manager + Winemaker/s

    Financial/Stock management including:
  • Create and assist in the creation of monthly in-house sales targets, and positively drive the attainment of such
  • Cellar door business analysis & profit/loss statements – reported quarterly
  • Development of an effective stock control system
  • Development of all costings for the Cellar Door products, produce, general trade and events
  • Identify the STP (Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning) for The Cellar by Gilbert as a venue

    Other duties as required:
  • Management and control of all operational aspects of the Cellar Door – this may include assistance to emerging staffing requirements, communication regarding weekly activities, maintenance, property & equipment repairs and maintenance & gardening requirements each seasonal quarter
  • Development & implementation of Cellar Door marketing strategies, promotions & social media exposure; in conjunction with the Marketing + Socials Manager/s
  • Within your duties in this position you will be supported by key management staff to further progress your skills and knowledge

Qualifications/Experience/Skills:

  • Previous work within the Wine industry – preferred but not essential
  • Sufficient wine knowledge &/or passion for wine, food and great coffee would be an advantage
  • RSA Certified - current
  • WSET or equivalent certification - desirable
  • Tertiary qualifications in Management - desirable
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing sales, hospitality &/or previous Cellar Door or Function experience would be an advantage
  • Strong team management experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Professionalism, punctual and well presented
  • Passionate about providing great customer service
  • A team player mentality - positive outgoing personality
  • Initiative, innovation and confidence to assist in continually improving the standards of the business – be able to see the big picture
  • Highly organised and efficient with the ability to prioritise and multi-task
  • Ability to be 'hands-on' and solve problems with ease – work well under pressure
  • A creative eye with attention to detail
  • Moderate administration skills – experience desired
  • Expected to assist with weekend work – must also be flexible to work outside of normal office hours for planned evening and/or weekend events, &/or public holidays
  • Live in the Mid-West Region or is in a position to relocate to Mudgee, NSW
  • Has the right to work in Australia
