About the Company
Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. They make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, from varieties that suit the cooler climate: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz.
About the Role and Duties
Reporting to the Senior Winemaker, the Laboratory Manager plays a vital role within the business, delivering technical services and product analysis to meet winemaking, production and quality needs. Located onsite at Balhannah in the Adelaide Hills, this is a full-time permanent position.
The role is responsible for routine sampling and analysis of juice and wine, QA/QC checks of bottling line and bottled wine during production, accurate and timely record keeping of all laboratory analysis results both written and using the EZYWINE system. Other areas of focus include the maintenance and ordering of laboratory consumables and stock, preparation of standard solutions, calibration of laboratory equipment and maintaining high standards of laboratory hygiene and housekeeping. In addition, the role is responsible for pre-vintage grape maturity sampling for external growers and Shaw + Smith vineyard grape samples and will attend to post vintage external and internal administration of bottling packaging runs. The position also manages the WH&S compliance for the business, HACCP and environmental reporting.
The hours required in this role increase at vintage and it’s necessary to support the needs of the business during this time when the business moves to 12-hour shifts, six days a week, the role includes the employment and training of a casual vintage laboratory technician.
Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will have a Science Degree and laboratory background within the wine industry, along with EZYWINE system experience. A bright, diligent, proactive and task focused individual, you have the confidence to work independently coupled with the ability to see the bigger picture and work together with the greater Shaw + Smith team. The successful application will have a continuous improvement focus, a strong attention to detail, and the understanding of the importance of accuracy to the role.
